Community Education

WINGS for Men works in two departments of Guatemala, Chimaltenango and Escuintla, using a variety of community education techniques. The men’s health educator conducts small group workshops with men using a series of six modules that cover the following topics: responsible fatherhood, male and female anatomy, family planning methods, sexually transmitted infections, gender, and partner communication and decision-making.

Men who attend these workshops and other male community leaders are invited to apply to be Peer Educators. These men are trained to serve as resources of information on sexual and reproductive health for men in their communities and distribute condoms. The WINGS for Men educator and the Peer Educators also distribute information for a mass media campaign with educational messages directed towards men. The information is disseminated via posters, postcards, pamphlets, radio spots, and local television appearances.  A recent impact evaluation of the mass media campaign was conducted in 2009 and suggested that the education campaign is succeeding in raising men's awareness around issues of reproductive health across Guatemala.
