WINGS for Men

A barrier analysis conducted by WINGS in 2005 indicated that gender inequality and misconceptions among men about family planning are major obstacles to contraceptive use in Guatemala.
Guatemala remains highly paternalistic, with widespread machista attitudes about women’s roles both within the family and in society at large. The fact that virtually all reproductive health and family planning programs target women rather than men only compounds this problem. Focus groups conducted by WINGS in 2007 demonstrated that there was significant demand among men for quality information about family planning.

To address the imbalance in reproductive health programming and to combat gender stereotypes, WINGS launched the WINGS for Men program in late 2007. The program, implemented in the departments of Chimaltenango and Escuintla, incorporates a number of elements, including:

•    Educational workshops for groups of men, consisting of six modules covering sexual and reproductive health, gender equality, responsible fatherhood, reproductive risk, sexually-transmitted infections (STIs) and family planning;
•    Mass media campaigns targeted at men, promoting sexual and reproductive health and responsible fatherhood;
•    Peer education, training men to act as advocates and information resources for reproductive health and gender equality in their communities;
•    Training of health care providers on the sexual and reproductive health needs of men.

This project is one of the first of its kind in Guatemala and builds on a growing international consensus around the importance of involving men as responsible partners in reproductive health programming.
