WINGS' cervical cancer staff members, in conjunction with local partners, conduct regular educational outreach to raise awareness about cervical cancer and increase participation in screenings. Often, women attending clinics have never been screened before and know very little about this form of cancer, its causes, and how it can be prevented.
In 2007, WINGS developed an educational video about cervical cancer designed for low-literacy audiences. The video features real-life testimonies from women who have recently gotten screened for the first time or have survived cervical cancer.
During cervical cancer clinics, WINGS also provides information about reproductive health and family planning. Women who are not currently using a contraceptive method and would like to space or limit their pregnancies are referred to WINGS-subsidized services. Often, cervical cancer screenings provide an opportunity for women who would otherwise be reluctant to go to a family planning talk, or visit a family planning service provider, to discuss these issues in a private, comfortable, and confidential setting.
